The "Garbage Kids" in Haiti
Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 12:58AM
Meet the latest addition of amazing kids to our network of care and Children's Homes in Haiti.(Story brought to you by the latest IMPACT HAITI team.) These kids came to us from Cite Soleil where they had been living in utter poverty; some of the worst condition you could imagine. But, they have now been in care with our newest children’s home for about 1 month. There are 69 kids in this group. They had been in a make-shift orphanage, in a tent, near the dump(Thus the term "Garbage Kids"), in the slums of Cite Soleil. One amazing woman, Guerlin, had been the sole care giver for these kids. Her heart to love and nurture these kids is incredible. But, no matter her intentions and love, the conditions were beyond poor. Everyday it rained, their location would flood with sewage. Their access to clean water was nearly non-existent. Basic food and medical care was merely a distant hope. That was 4 weeks ago...... Thanks to the hard work and generosity of many people and a few churches, they have been moved into a new location, in a safe and solid home.

Now it's time for you and I to get involved. There is a great need here. Just because these kids are no longer living in a dump doesn't mean they are without great need. We want to see these kids well taken care of, along with the hundreds of other kids that are coming in and out of our Children's Homes in Haiti. Take a few minutes and watch this video from our latest trip to Haiti with Trent Kirkland and the teams from Zion and Grace Church. It will help you see how you could get involved.

So....Here are 3 practical ways you can get involved...
- It costs $1200 per month to provide the basic food and clean water needs for a Children's Home each month! Every dollar counts, and you can contribute to the whole amount, or contribute the whole amount!
- It costs between $400 and $600 to properly staff a Children's Home each month. That is a staff of "house moms", a cook and security. Not only does it change these kids' lives, but it also provides income for the staff's families. All of our staff comes from a direct relationship with the local church and as a result our staff is like family.
- There is still a great need to build more beds for these kids. There are about 10 of the 30 needed beds built to date. The costs of a single bed is roughly $175. You can help get these kids off the floor by providing funding for a bed.
How will you get involved? Truly...I believe that you cannot ignore this need. You and I are charged by God to get involved and make an impact. Consider 1 Timothy 6:17-19, "Tell those rich in this world's wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage - to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they'll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life."If you want to start contributing to the needs of the "Garbage Kids" or other kids in Haiti, CLICK HERE

I was reading the Bible this morning and came along this verse, Psalms 113:7 and he lifts the poor from the dirt and the needy from the garbage dump. This morning I have been reminded how merciful God is. God saw those children in Haiti and he lifted them out of the terrible conditons they were living in. We serve a great God! He hears our cry, He sees the need and answers our prayers. God Bless the Garbage Kids of Haiti!
